Huan Xu gained her PhD degree in Department of Microelectronics & Electrical Engineering, Trinity College, University of Dublin (Ireland) in 1991. In 1996 she became a member of the Engineering Department, Cambridge University as a Research Associate. Her expertise is in the research and development of liquid crystal materials. This includes electro-optic characterization and dynamic study with dielectric spectroscopy, as well as evaluation of structure and of physical properties by DSC, TGA, FTIR, X-ray etc. She also carried out equipment set-up and dielectric measurements with wide band dielectric spectroscopy, which includes tunable dielectrics in the microwave region for microwave applications. She has many years of experience in the area of liquid crystals, including materials with nematic, ferroelectric and anti-ferroelectric, smectic, TGB phases. In recent years she carried out development of liquid crystal materials for various types of liquid crystal over silicon (LCOS) display devices, which include ultra fast response elecroclinic switching (200 ns), UV stable nematic LCs for phase modulation devices, bi-stable and repairable siloxane based ferroelectric LCs for LCoS devices. Presently, she is working on SmA liquid crystal/colorant mixtures for colour displays, which involves the investigation of colour mixing technology and nanoparticle/LC colloidal systems.
