Dr John Wooler most recently has research interests within the ORC Microstructured Optical Fibre group working to integrate hollow-core photonic band gap fibre with conventional fibre types to characterize and exploit the rich potential in novel properties offered by these fibre types. He has considerable experience in the development of fibre and devices, with particular knowledge of the design, fabrication and testing of optical fibres and fibre optic sensors, with associated interferometric interrogation systems and multiplexing architectures. He also has expertise creating and optimising recipes for splicing a wide range of specialty fibre types, latterly focusing on microstructured fibres. Dr Wooler worked for many years in industry supporting the commercial manufacture of optical fibres and exploitation of fibre devices, continuing to be involved in research projects with strong industrial collaboration, and is enthusiastic about forging links between industry and academia. His qualifications include an MPhys higher degree, involving fibre based near-field-scanning optical microscopy, and an Engineering Doctorate in Photonics concerning fibre optic sensors for dynamic signal detection.
Dr John Wooler is (or has formerly been) affiliated with Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton and University of Southampton.
