Rob Topley enrolled on a degree program at the University of Surrey in 2006, achieving a First class honours degree in Electronic Engineering with AUS distinction in 2010. During his time at Surrey, he received the IET award for best final year project as well as obtaining the ICS Triplex award for best performance in Business Administration. In light of the performance in his final year project, which was all optical modulation in silicon on insulator, he was nominated for and shortlisted to the final three candidates for the Electronic Engineering student of the year award at the European Science, Engineering & Technology (SET) awards 2010 sponsored by ARM. Having achieved sponsorship from UK Silicon Photonics Rob joined the Silicon Photonics group at the Advanced Technology Institute at Surrey and continued on to a research based PhD investigating wafer scale testing. Following a lucrative offer, Rob transferred to Southampton University to complete his PhD and is now a Senior Research Assistant, with research interests in wafer scale testing and integrated optics.
