Tom Cross attended school in Derby and read Electronic Engineering at the University of Wales, Bangor (then UCNW). After a period of employment at the research laboratories of the Marconi Company at Great Baddow, just outside Chelmsford, he returned to Bangor to conduct research into the microwave Hall effect in biological materials being awarded a PhD in 1982. He remained as a post doc at Bangor until 1984 when he was appointed as a lecturer at Nottingham. Dr Cross' research activities at Nottingham have included real-time modelling of the vocal tract, microwave imaging and, more recently, exploring the industrial uses of microwave energy. This included the development of facilities to measure the microwave properties of materials at temperatures up to about 2000°C. He is a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET) and the Institute of Physics (MIoP).

Dr Tom Cross is (or has formerly been) affiliated with Photonic and Radio Frequency Engineering Group, University of Nottingham and University of Nottingham.
