Dr. Natalie Wheeler completed her Mphys and PhD at the University of Bath in 2007 and 2010 respectively. Her PhD focussed on the development of large core, hollow core photonic crystal fibres (HC-PCFs) for integration into ‘photonic microcell’ form; in a photonic microcell a length of HC-PCF is filled with a chosen gas species (e.g. acetylene) and then spliced at both ends to standard solid fibre in order to simultaneously trap the chosen gas inside and provide low loss input and output coupling to the device. Natalie joined the microstructured fibre group at the University of Southampton in 2010, primarily as a fibre fabricator, focussing on fabrication of ultra-low loss HC-PCFs for telecommunications applications. Current research interests also include fabrication of low loss and low bend sensitivity HC-PCFs for operation in the mid-IR and gas spectroscopy.
