Jarno graduated from the University of Joensuu in 2006 with an MSc degree in diffractive optics (MSc thesis about ultrashort laser ablation of metals). Later on, he got his PhD degree from the University of Eastern Finland in the end of 2011. His PhD thesis handles ultrashort laser ablation of the functional surfaces using diffractive optical based methods. Ultrashort pulse ablation was used to fabricate high absorption, water-repellent and diffracting surfaces using both interference and diffractive optical element based optical methods. During his PhD studies he also worked one year as a visiting researcher in a Laser-Laboratorium G̦ttingen, G̦ttingen Germany. Currently, Jarno is a visiting researcher within the High Power Laser Application group at Heriot-Watt University. Laser machining of the various structures and materials using the adaptive optics is currently his main interest.
Dr Jarno Kaakkunen is (or has formerly been) affiliated with Applied Optics and Photonics Research, Heriot Watt University and Heriot-Watt University.
